Our Charism

“A charism is a grace given for the sake not only of the recipient but also and primarily for the upbuilding of the Church.” [Sandra Schneiders 2000]

As our Patron Saints Martha and Mary offered their home in Bethany in service to Jesus and the first disciples; the Order of the Companions of Martha and Mary is modelled on their service to Jesus. The charism – grace – that has been given to us by the Holy Spirit is to serve God and God’s Church in a life of prayerful presence and hospitality.

As we live our everyday life this charism is expressed in many ways. Firstly, in our life of prayer as we gather for corporate worship seven times a day and, like Mary, spend time in private prayer at the “feet of Jesus”. Secondly, in our practice of hospitality most visibly in providing time and space for individuals to “come away and rest awhile” [Mark 6:13]

Our hospitality is not limited to those who visit as we seek to be present and attentive to everyone we meet, no matter for how short a time. Our hospitality is also extended towards the natural world as we strive to live in an eco-friendly way honouring God’s presence in all of creation.
